Preventing Smells In A High-Efficiency Washer

High-efficiency washing machines have become a popular consumer item thanks to their sleek design and use of less water. But a common problem with these machines is an unpleasant smell that is reminiscent of mold or mildew. This problem is caused by bacteria and residue building up inside of the drum, resulting in a very unpleasant musty odor. If you own a high-efficiency washer and you're experiencing this problem, here is what you can do to stop it and prevent it from occurring in the future.

The Right Laundry Detergent

Standard laundry detergents create a lot of suds and foam. This foam will undoubtedly result in excess residue accumulating inside your high-efficiency washer. Instead, be sure you only use detergents labeled as "HE" detergents. These special detergents contain less suds-producing chemicals so your washer produces minimal residue. Be aware that using too much of any detergent will contribute to residue buildup. Only use enough detergent to get the job done, and avoid using liquid fabric softeners that will just compound the residue problem. Instead, stick with standard dryer sheets when possible.

Keep It Clean

Your high-efficiency washer should be cleaned occasionally to help keep smells at bay. You can do this easily by adding approximately two cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser. Run a normal cycle using hot water to run the vinegar through the machine. When the cycle is over, wipe down the interior door, tub, and rubber boot seal using a soft cloth soaked with vinegar. All of these areas can accumulate residue and create mildew, so regular cleaning can keep the problem at bay. Cleaning the drain pump filter regularly is also recommended. This pump contains a special filter designed to trap lint, debris, and moisture that can create an unpleasant smell if it's not kept clean.

Use The Hot Water Cycle

While washing with cold water saves energy, it can contribute to bacteria-related problems. Hot water helps to kill mold and mildew. When possible. run a load of laundry using the hot water cycle for your last load of laundry at the end of the day. This will help to kill off any remaining residue and mold that accumulates when you use the cold water cycle. Even if you do not have a load of laundry that requires hot water, it's recommended that you run your washer on the hot water cycle periodically just to help keep your machine clean. Add a cup of bleach for even more effective cleaning. With some simple techniques, you'll be able to quell the smell.

Now that you know how to take care of the possible smells, you can feel confident in purchasing a high efficiency washer from a company like Hudson Appliance Center.
